A Healing Prayer Service will be held Sunday, April 29, 2012

The Healing Prayer Service is particularly planned for those who have cancer and for those who love and care for them.  The service will include an opportunity to see, hold and touch a First Class Relic of Saint Peregrine, Patron of those afflicted with cancer.  All who have cancer and all those concerned for someone with cancer are welcome to attend.

No reservations required.

The prayer service is expected to take just over an hour or slightly longer.

Cookies, punch and conversation will be available afterword in the Church Social Hall.

In February 2010, the Youth People Foundation Against Cancer organized the 1st. International Meeting for Young People with
Cancer and Survivors, bringing together 112 soldiers from 12 countries and 3 continents. The foundation has become an important contribution to national and international community and visit different countries like Colombia, Mexico, Argentina, Venezuela, Uruguay and Peru.

OBJECTIVES:
Develop a statement which young people with cancer of the World present their proposals to the treatments, priorities, rights
and public health policies.

SHARING STRATEGIES, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE THAT EVERY ORGANIZATION IMPLEMENTED IN THEIR OWN COUNTRY FOR THE INTEGRAL DEVELOPMENT OF YOUTH PEOPLE IN TREATMENT.

JUSTIFICATION OF THE CONVENTION

1. The lack of infrastructure and information directed to young people with cancer which affects the knowledge and increasing abandonment of treatment.
2. The discrimination which affects so many young people in various aspects such as: economic, social, medical and psychological, limiting a good quality of life.
3. The lack of palliative care, debts and psychological support to caregivers are real concerns in advanced stages.
4. The Self-esteem of young people tends to fall in response to side effects of treatments (hair loss, weakness, isolation, nausea, etc.)
5. The economic dependence of young people, between 14 and 21 years of age, because normally they do not work and study and consequently do not have their own income.
6. Amputations and transplants affect them physically, financially, emotionally and socially.
7. The lack of psycho-oncologists, pediatric oncologists, surgeons and other specialists in the area of children and adolescents, is a vital necessity.

BENEFITS FOR YOUTH ATTENDING THE CONVENTION

1. To develop leadership skills, encourage social networking among young participants.
2. Create, share, tips, themes and projections to jointly tackle the disease as rituals for warriors, photography workshops, gladiators of hope, ambassadors of joy and other ongoing projects.
3. Better manage the side effects of chemotherapy, radiotherapy, treatment and survival.
4. Tend to make society aware of the problem of cancer in young people, respect and provide opportunities to study, work and develop normally.
5. Encourage public authorities and institutions dedicated to youth to truly support projects for young people with cancer.

METHODOLOGY OF THE CONVENTION

• Young people will be organized in groups classified by diagnosis: Leukemia, ALL, AML, sarcoma, lymphoma, brain, osteosarcoma and other.
• Each group will issue a document with the main recommendations of their disease.
• There will be activities and workshops for groups and in general as dynamics, movies, forums, outings and lectures.

Fight Oral Cancer Foundation (FOCF) will be holding a free oral cancer screening at Campion Trail, T.W. Richardson Grove Park on September 19th.

Support Groups are an important part of walking through the treatment process for those that have been diagnosed with oral cancer.  SPOHNC (short for Support for People with Oral and Head and Neck Cancer) is committed to developing programs to support those that are on that journey.

Last year the Fight Oral Cancer Foundation had the privilege of participating in the SPOHNC fundraiser in Irving. While at the event we conducted free oral cancer screenings. Dr. Fitzgerald screened many attendees and referred 5 attendees to seek further diagnosis from doctors.

FOCF in collaboration with SPOHNC is delighted to be a part of this event again this year on September 19th. We will be conducting free oral cancer screenings.  You are invited to come out to the event and be a part of the great work that SPOHNC is doing to make a difference in the lives of those that have fallen victim to this horrible disease.

FOCF was pleased to participate in a free oral cancer screening on May 26, 2010 in Plano, TX during the Plano Senior Recreation Center’s health fair. We donated our Identifi (Trimira) machine and informational pamphlets, wrist bands and some other goodies for the cause.

This was the first time the Center conducted Oral Cancer Examinations using the Trimira Identafi, a leading oral cancer screening piece of technology.   Volunteers from three schools of Dental Hygiene at Texas Women’s University, Collin College and Baylor preformed the examinations. They were assisted by volunteers from Contemporary Oral Surgery and Dr. Lesslie Moore.   Approximately 200-250 people were screened.

The event was organized by Deborah Stewart with the help of Community Dental Care,  Dr. Lee Fitzgerald,  and the Fight Oral Cancer Foundation.

May is the National Fight Oral Cancer Month.  The May Cover of The Journal of the American Dental Association magazine (JADA) is about oral cancer.  Below is an excerpt from the article.

The American Cancer Society (ACS) estimated that there would be 35,720 new cases of cancer of the oral and pharyngeal region in the United States in 2009, with 7,600 deaths from the disease.1 When focusing specifically on the oral cavity, ACS estimated that in 2009, there would be 23,110 new cases of cancer of the oral cavity (hereafter referred to as “oral cancer”) and 5,370 deaths. Nearly 90 percent of these malignancies are squamous cell carcinomas. More than 97 percent of U.S. cases of these cancers occur among adults 35 years and older. Although the incidence rate (IR) of oral and pharyngeal cancers is decreasing overall, the IR of cancers of the tongue, oropharynx and tonsil is increasing. The 2002–2006 age-adjusted (to the 2000 U.S. population) IR of oral and pharyngeal cancers in the United States was 10.3 per 100,000 per year. The age-adjusted IR was more than twice as high among men (15.9) as among women (6.0), as was the mortality rate (men, 4.0; women, 1.5).

Among the groups described in data from the National Cancer Institute’s Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results program, African-American men are at the highest risk of developing oral and pharyngeal cancers of any group in the United States (IR 16.7 per 100,000 per year). The five-year relative survival rate varies widely by stage at the time of diagnosis, from 81.8 percent for patients diagnosed in localized stages and 52.1 percent for patients with regional lymph node involvement to 26.5 percent for patients with distant metastasis. Yet, oral and pharyngeal cancer is diagnosed at a localized stage in only one-third of patients in the United States. The overall five-year relative survival rate for the 1999–2005 period was 61.0 percent and varied significantly by race (62.4 percent for white men and 38.2 percent for black men). Much of the racial disparity in survival rates was due to the greater proportion of tumors diagnosed at late stages among black men than among white men.
